Zillah Morris – Welfare Officer & LTA Audit Survey

Dear Fellow Members

I am Zillah Morris, my involvement at Trull Lawn Tennis Club is as a parent and Welfare Officer.

Background:

The club, since June 2018, has been required to have a range of measures in place including:

  • Welfare Officer post
  • Safeguarding Policies
  • Clear systems and processes to support safe play
  • Appropriate checks on club personnel
  • Creating and maintaining a safe environment for all

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the Leadership Committee as well as specifically John Barrington, Chairman and Jon Warren as Head Coach on achieving an environment where we all take our responsibilities seriously whilst seamlessly promoting and supporting the tennis club in many different ways.

Please can I respectfully ask that we all make ourselves familiar with the Codes of Conduct, Fair Play, Safeguarding policies and processes in order that we to continue to prosper as an inclusive, friendly and safe local village tennis club.  All documents and information have been available both in the clubhouse on the Welfare Board and online at the website www.trulltennis.co.uk for the last year.

Observations:

In general we’ve had some super tennis weather over the last year- although at Trull only the most severe of weather conditions seems to stop players on court!

The Saturday morning junior and youth members club coaching is well supported and always great fun with a welcome mix of ages and abilities.  It is wonderful to see. For those who are competitive with their drive and hunger to get better and succeed in their own way, alongside those who want to have some fun and meet new people as well as quietly improve week on week; Trull is the place for everyone.

The Adults have a thriving set of both friendly and competitive teams where we see many practice and social nights throughout the week well attended.  If, like me, time is sometimes difficult, give it a go!  You will always be welcomed and included.

Jon Warren, Head Coach,  provides a variety of coaching opportunities for you all- all ages and abilities.  Please make sure you contact him about any of your short term or long term coaching requirements across the seasons.

Finally, as Welfare Officer, clearly it is important for me to ensure we have a safe, fair and fun tennis club here in Trull.  Please don’t hesitate to get involved and enjoy tennis.  I am very happy to field any queries at any time in relation to any of the above information or topics.

LTA Audit on Safeguarding:

We have an visit and Audit by the LTA on 27th August 2019 to check that we have all the correct posts, policies, and most importantly safe and inclusive culture here at Trull.  The following is from the LTA and I would be very grateful (if you have read thus far!) to complete the short survey they have produced.

Many thanks and keep enjoying your tennis!

Zillah

New Head Coach

I am pleased to announce that we have appointed a new Head Coach at Trull called Jon Warren.  Jon is local to the area and has many years coaching experience, working at Taunton Tennis Centre, Wellington Tennis Club, David Lloyd Centre in Cardiff and Annabel Croft tennis academy in Sardinia!  Jon is currently an LTA level 3 coach and is working towards his level 4 qualification this summer.

Jon will be starting his new position full time from the week commencing Monday 7th May.  In the meantime he will continue to run the Saturday morning junior coaching as he has been doing for a few weeks already.  Jon is also available for one to one or small group lessons but at a limited availability until the week of the 7th May as he is currently working elsewhere.  However, from 7th May Jon plans to commence all the same adult and junior coaching sessions which Richard Stock was previously running.  Further information will go up in the clubhouse very soon about coaching, events and special offers!  Jon’s contact details are: Telephone: 07518989621 or Email jonwarrentennis@hotmail.com.  If you have any enquiries about junior or adult tennis please don’t hesitate to contact him and he is looking forward to meeting everybody.

Wimbledon Ticket Allocation

Trull has been allocated 10 pairs of Wimbledon Tickets this year.  The grid and all the details are up on the wall in the clubhouse.  The deadline for putting your name up is 7th May.  You need to be a BTM opted in member and have paid your Trull Tennis Club membership to be eligible to win the right to buy tickets from the club.  This will be drawn at the club during the evening of 8th May.

America Doubles Tournament

Spring is finally arriving … After the popularity of the American Doubles Tournament last year, we are running another on Bank Holiday Monday 7th May from 2pm until approx. 5pm.  There will be a poster and entry list in the Club House – please join in!  Maximum number of competitors is 24, so get your name down soon!  This is a chance for the “A”s and “S”s to get together for a fun afternoon, with a cream tea.  Alternatively you can contact  David Hill  davehill007@hotmail.com if you are interested.  It is suitable for all tennis abilities and juniors from 15 years and upwards may also join in.

Veterans Tennis (over 60’s)

If you qualify and are interested in playing super veterans’ tennis – socially or in local matches against other clubs please contact Karen Simon who is organising it by email kbdsimon@hotmail.com or 07876457216.  The aim is to have a regular weekly slot on a day/time suitable to most who express an interest.

Club Nights

Now the sun is shining (well possibly this week), don’t forget that club sessions are on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings from around 6.30 pm onwards and open to all adult members (and any visitors who may be interested in joining the club).  Just turn up and play in with fellow members – you don’t need a partner  – all ages and abilities welcome!   Saturday afternoons social play is also running from 2pm onwards.

Tuesday evening is also a club session for those who are ‘Advanced’ members and have paid the higher subscription.  This is from 6pm onwards every Tuesday evening.  Anybody who is currently a ‘standard’ member and would like to come along on a Tuesday to see what the tennis standard is like is more than welcome to do so.  Contact David Hill David Hill – davehill007@hotmail.com or just turn up and he will be there on most Tuesdays!

Membership Renewals

Gentle reminder that membership renewals are due now, so please complete the membership form and payment either online on via cheque before 30th April to avoid the £10 late payment fee.

Richard Stock – Head Coach update

Unfortunately Richard has decided that he is retiring from tennis coaching and therefore leaving his Head Coaching role at Trull Tennis Club.  Richard still wishes to be a member of the club and is working with the Committee to ensure that some, if not all, of his group sessions will continue, albeit with a different coach. In particular Saturday morning coaching will continue.   John Barrington will be in touch direct with parents of junior members.

John has approached two local coaches who are looking to see how they can help out in the short term as we are very keen to maintain the good work which Richard has achieved in a short space of time.  We will let members know what is going to be available shortly.  We are advertising with the LTA for a replacement Head Coach for Trull and are hopeful that there will be good interest.  The closing date is Monday 5th March and then the Committee will undertake a selection process for the most suitable.

Saturday afternoon social tennis

Please come along from 2 pm onwards.  Cathie and Sarah would like to see as many of you ‘social’ players as possible this Saturday afternoon.  (The weather forecast is looking more promising than last week!!).  It is hoped that Saturday afternoons will be a regular weekly occurrence where you just come along and play and socialise with  fellow club members.

Wimbledon Tickets/Ballot

Please remember that the deadline for opting in for the Wimbledon Ballot is 23rd February 2018.  If you are currently a British Tennis Member (BTM) then you just need to respond to emails which you have been sent from the LTA reminding you to opt in.  YOU HAVE TO DO THIS EACH YEAR.  If you are not currently a British Tennis Member, then please go on to the LTA website for further information as to how to get one and opt in.  It is free. www.lta.org.uk/member

The importance of becoming an ‘opted in’ BTM is that the more members opted in we have as a tennis club the more Wimbledon Tickets we get allocated each year.  If you are not opted in then you cannot get Wimbledon tickets via Trull Tennis Club when we ‘raffle’ the right to buy the tickets we have been allocated.

Floodlights

As many members will be aware there have been ongoing issues with the floodlight failure, primarily on the bottom courts.  Electricians have been out and hopefully the issues has been resolved.  However due to the age of the lights it is likely that further problems will be encountered and to that end the Committee are now working on a complete overhaul of the floodlights on all 4 courts.  We are actively looking at various systems and costing options.  As you will appreciate this is a highly complex issue, that is also potentially highly expensive and the committee take the view that it is absolutely crucial that the right decision is made.  Please bear with us and be assured that progress is being made towards our goal of completely revamping the lighting system with a modern solution to serve the club’s need for many years to come.

New Member Taster Sessions 2018

We are planning on having New Member Taster sessions again this year on Wednesday 4th April, Monday 9th, Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th April in the evenings.  These sessions are free for adults to come along and try out the club.  Further details will follow but if you have any friends/family who may be interested in joining please invite them along.
